Powering Devices Anywhere With Vehicle-to-Load Charging on the 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 5

Powering Devices Anywhere With Vehicle-to-Load Charging on the 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 5

Summer in Nova Scotia often means a cottage down a gravel road, a coastline that can lose power in a wind storm, or a driveway full of gear waiting for its next charge. The 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 5 carries a feature built for exactly those moments: Vehicle-to-Load power that turns the SUV’s own battery into a source of electricity, not just a destination for it.

What Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) Actually Means

Most EVs only move electricity in one direction, from a charger into the battery. Vehicle-to-Load runs the other way too.

The IONIQ 5’s onboard charger works as a two-way system, drawing from the 84 kWh battery to run equipment that would otherwise need a wall outlet. That’s bi-directional charging in practical terms: the same battery that gets the IONIQ 5 down the highway can also send power out when you’re parked at a cottage, a trailhead, or your own driveway during an outage.

The charge port itself, a NACS connector with CCS adapters, still handles bringing power in for daily charging. V2L works through a separate outlet built for sending power the other way.

How It’s Built Into the 2026 IONIQ 5

V2L isn’t the same across every IONIQ 5 trim, so what you get depends on which one you’re looking at.

The Preferred Long Range AWD with Ultimate Package includes a Vehicle-to-Load two-way onboard charger built into the second row as standard equipment. It’s a dedicated outlet inside the cabin, positioned near the sliding second-row seats, not an aftermarket add-on. That same second row folds 60/40 and reclines, so the space doubles as a spot to organize gear while it charges.

The IONIQ 5 N goes further, pairing that same interior outlet with exterior V2L capability through a separate accessory. Having both outlets means you can draw power from inside the cabin or from outside the vehicle, depending on the equipment.

The Preferred Long Range RWD and the standard Preferred Long Range AWD, without the Ultimate Package, don’t include the second-row V2L outlet as configured.

Why It Matters for a Nova Scotia Summer

A cottage stretch without a hydro line, a camp kitchen at the end of a gravel driveway, or a stretch of coastline that loses power in a summer storm are all situations where a wall outlet isn’t guaranteed.

With the second-row outlet, the IONIQ 5 becomes the outlet. The 745-litre cargo hold, or 1,655 litres with the second row folded, leaves room for coolers and camp gear alongside whatever you’re running off the battery. The 24-litre front trunk is a convenient spot to stash the adaptor and cables when they’re not in use.

Range is part of the equation too. The Preferred Long Range RWD covers up to 504 km, and the AWD versions cover up to 463 km, so running gear for an afternoon at a cottage or campsite barely touches what you need to get home again.

Which Buyers Get the Most Out of V2L

For someone splitting time between the highway and a cottage road, the Preferred Long Range AWD with Ultimate Package pairs standard V2L with all-wheel drive and extras like heated rear seats and an 8-speaker Bose audio system. It’s a straightforward way to add off-grid power without stepping up to the N.

The IONIQ 5 N adds the option of exterior V2L, useful for anyone running equipment too large for a second-row outlet, though the exterior function needs the separate accessory to work.

Anyone looking at the Preferred Long Range RWD or the standard AWD trim should know V2L isn’t part of that configuration, and should ask about the trims that include it before deciding.

Vehicle-to-Load turns the 2026 IONIQ 5 into more than a way to get somewhere. It’s a power source for cottage stays, camp sites, and coastal outages, standard on the Preferred Long Range AWD with Ultimate Package and available on the IONIQ 5 N.

Visit Central Nova Hyundai in New Glasgow to see the second-row outlet and the exterior V2L accessory in person, and find the trim that matches how you use power on the road.
